It took only one day of streaming for Nicki Minaj's two latest singles to debut on the Billboard Hot 100. Another week and "Chun-Li" has blasted from No. 92 to No. 10, the 16th top 10 single (and 86th Hot 100) for Minaj. The only other female rapper to come close is Missy Elliott with nine Top 10s. However, Minaj (born Onika Maraj) hasn't done it all alone. For both "Chun-Li" and "Barbie Tingz" she enlisted the help of producer Jeremy Reid.
New to the chart this week, Reid (AKA Lil Chevi) was an unlikely choice by Nicki. But since the duo linked up in December, Reid has signed on to join her new, as of yet unnamed, label imprint. Though somewhat unknown, Reid's boom-bap beats drew Nicki in, choosing the 2nd of 15 he'd written for "Barbie Tingz." Another one of those beats became "Chun-Li," and only a weekend before it was released. As with any great producer, there's more to the process than meets the eye.
Though Minaj & Reid are gearing up for the challenge, Belcalis Almanzar (AKA Cardi B) continues her stronghold, following her No. 1 return last week with Invasion of Privacy.
