It's no secret that hip-hop has taken over the airwaves. For months now, the Billboard Hot 100 has been heavily smattered with the genre, reflected in the top songwriters you see here each week. But it's emo rap that has seen some of the most impressive builds, from artists like Post Malone, and now, Juice WRLD (AKA Jared Higgins).
Like many artists & songwriters in this space, Higgins, 19, comes to the scene from a Soundcloud background, gaining significant notoriety with "Lucid Dreams," & later "All Girls Are The Same." The former has since racked up 4 million streams on the platform, catching the eye of Interscope A&R, who reportedly signed Higgins for an impressive $3 million joint venture just a few months ago.
Due in part to the label's efforts, both songs, produced by beatmaker Nick Mira (whose other credits include XXXTENTACION, Lil Uzi Vert, Trippie Redd, Lil Yachty, A Boogie, Trey Songz, & Lil Skies, debuted at No. 74 & 92 on Billboard's Hot 100 last week. Just one week later, "Lucid Dreams" has broken the Top 40.
With samples from Sting's "Shape Of My Heart," the song isn't slowing down anytime soon.
